Difference Between Valerian Root & Valerian

Valerian, or Valeriana officinalis, is a perennial herb native to Europe. Valerian root has been used for centuries as a folk remedy; the root is the only part of the valerian plant that has medicinal benefits. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Valerian Herb

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, valerian plants grow to be 2 feet tall. They have pointed dark green leaves and pompom-like clusters of purple or pink flowers that grow from long, straight stems. They are often cultivated as ornamental garden plants because of their attractive, sweet-smelling blossoms.

    Valerian Root

    • The American Cancer Society explains that valerian root has little odor when fresh, but dried root has a smell like dirty socks. The dried roots are marketed in capsule, tablet and liquid extract form as a treatment for anxiety and sleeplessness. Valerian root is also brewed as a tea.

    Considerations

    • Valerian increases the amount of GABA, or gamma aminobutyric acid, in the brain. This acid has a calming effect, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Valerian is regarded as safe for general use. However, it increases the effects of sedative drugs such as Ambien and Valium and lengthens the time it takes to wake up after anesthesia.
