The most important aspect of buying a new toilet seat is buying a seat that fits your toilet. Seats come in two different shapes, round and elongated, which are different sizes. Measure back from the center front of the toilet bowl to the center of the toilet seat hinge post holes. Use a tape measure. If the measurement is approximately 16 1/2 inches, buy a round seat; if the measurement is around 18 1/2 inches, buy an elongated seat. Measure the distance between the hinge post holes to ensure it is the standard 5 1/2 inches.
