Diatomaceous Earth
-
According to Mother Earth News, diatomaceous earth, a fossilized algae with razor-sharp edges, penetrates insect exoskeletons, like those on fleas, to dehydrate and eventually kill them. Sprinkling this chalklike substance around frequented areas, or immediately before sitting for a lounge in the backyard, for instance, can help keep fleas at bay.
