Care & Upkeep of Bamboo Plants

Bamboo is becoming increasingly popular as a houseplant. It has a contemporary look and requires little in the way of care. Bamboo is adaptable to a variety of light conditions, as well. The following tips will keep your plant thriving.

Choose the Right Container

A wide, shallow bowl tends to work best for bamboo, as it "runs" and produces new growth via rhizomes. Allow for a couple of inches of space between the root ball and the wall of the container.

Light Requirements

Most types of bamboo, particularly those of tropical origin, are tolerant of low light. Some growers assert that the larger the leaf of a particular variety, the less light it requires.

Fertilizer and Water

Like many common houseplants, bamboo will benefit from an occasional supplement of a balanced, time-release fertilizer. Keep soil moist, but not soaked.

Manicure

Some growers prune the leaves from the bottom third of the stalks, or culms, for aesthetic reasons. You may also trim or remove any unattractive culms to maintain your plant's neat appearance.
