Types

Chipboard exists in a couple of forms. The term may refer to a flexible, cardboard-type substance made from recycled paper, or it may describe a form of compressed wood similar to plywood.
Recycled Paper

The flexible form of chipboard is commonly used to provide backing and texture to scrapbooks and other craft projects. It is the same material used as the back cover of many spiral notebooks and legal pads.

Compressed Wood

Chipboard formed from compressed wood is used for the majority of inexpensive countertops. The chipboard is covered with a decorative laminate that gives it a finished appearance. A number of other work surfaces are made from chipboard as well.
Other Forms

Some forms of chipboard are fire- and water-resistant, making them useful for a number of other building purposes.
