What If I Can't Get My Taxes Done by the 15th?
The income tax filing deadline for federal income taxes is April 15 of each year. If that deadline falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline moves back to the next business day.
-
Function
-
The IRS offers a six-month filing extension to anyone who requests it, regardless of the reason. By requesting the extension, you do not have to file until October 15.
Features
-
You can request a filing extension by completing and submitting IRS form 4868. This form must be submitted by April 15 to qualify for the extension.
-
Warning
-
The extension to file does not mean an extension to pay. You must still pay all the taxes that you owe by April 15. Any unpaid amount will accrue interest and possibly penalties. You should make a payment based on your best estimate of how much you owe--it is better to overpay and get a refund when you file than to underpay and owe interest and penalties.
