Areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) is also known as golden cane palm, Madagascar palm, butterfly palm and Arecal utescens. Areca palm will grow as tall as 20 feet and produces yellow flowers and fruit that starts out yellow and turns purple when ripe. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Climate

    • The tree is hardy in USDA zones 10 and 11. Areca palm is endangered in its native Madagascar, but is flourishing in tropical and subtropical regions.

    Environment

    • Plant Areca palm in a moist, fertile, well-drained soil. The tree is tolerant of both sun and shade, but prefers a diffused light situation. Areca palm is also grown in containers.

    Maintenance

    • The Areca palm needs protection from scale insects but otherwise is relatively pest-free. Water during the dry season and protect the tree from frost. Feed with a fertilizer that is high in potassium.
