Rural Mailbox Specifications in Louisiana
Rural mailboxes are curbside mailboxes that the postal worker drives up to. The United States Postal Service (USPS) regulates rural mailbox specifications in all 50 states, including Louisiana.

All rural mailboxes purchased from a manufacturer in Louisiana are required to meet the sizing standards and requirements of the USPS standard 7, available through USPS engineering. Custom built mailboxes that are similar in size and stability to a manufactured mailbox are eligible for approval by your local postmaster, according to the USPS's Domestic Mail Manual. All rural mailboxes in Louisiana must be on the right hand side of the road, be 6 to 8 inches from the road and be 41 to 45 inches tall at the bottom of the box, according to the USPS Residential Mailbox Standards. The address, house number or owner's name must be on the mailbox and be at least 1 inch tall.

Rural mailboxes with a lock must have a slot large enough for daily mail to be passed through, according to the USPS Residential Mailbox Standards. A newspaper delivery box may be placed under a rural mailbox, if it does not interfere with mail delivery or have advertisements separate from the newspaper's title. Before moving your mailbox be sure to get approval from your postmaster.
