Humane officers are more than just dog catchers.

Humane officers, also referred to as animal control workers, keep humans safe from animals as well as keep abandoned or neglected animals safe and cared for. They may work as a government (city or county) employee or for a nonprofit organization such as the Humane Society or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Humane officers have a range of salaries depending on the region, position held and length of service. However, overall these are not high-paying jobs. This is due to the high cost of animal care that also includes food, shelter and veterinary expenses.

Low End

At the low end of the salary range, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, animal control workers made $9.39 an hour as of May 2009. This equates to $19,540 per year.

High End

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the higher range for animal control workers is $24.60 per hour as of May 2009. This works out to an annual salary of $51,170.

Average Salaries

The average salary as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is $16.14 an hour and $33,560 per year as of May 2009 . This average includes all regions and levels of humane officers.
