Types
-
Choose several different types of decorations to make the party scene authentic. For instance, you can set up the celebration like a 1950s roller rink by hanging small roller skates in the doorway and adorning the table with pink or black streamers or tablecloths. If you want to give the party a "Happy Days" theme, tack a few leather biker jackets to the wall and rent a jukebox for the event.
Significance
-
Be sure that some of the decor has special significance for the guest of honor. For instance, purchase a party poster for the main wall in the shape of a vinyl record and decorate it with the words "Happy Birthday (guest of honor's name)." The centerpiece for the table can also have a 1950s theme that may remind your friend or loved one of their childhood, such as a small replica of a 1957 Chevy with the words "Happy Birthday" and the name of the birthday boy or girl on the windshield.

Considerations
-
If you don't have much space to work with, or want to throw a 1950s party on a budget, focus on adorning the walls so that the floor and table space will be reserved for as many guests as possible. For instance, hang a few posters displaying scenes from the movie "West Side Story" or display posters of celebrities who were introduced to the world in the 1950s, such as Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe.
