Old computer monitors contain dangerous amounts of lead.

Old computer monitors must be properly disposed of the amount of lead in the cathode ray tube or (CRT). According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, monitors contain four pounds of lead or more, and therefore qualify as hazardous waste.

  1. Trade Ins

    • Most states require major computer manufacturers to offer their customers a trade-in program for their old monitors. For example, Gateway offers rebates of up to $50 against the value of a new computer. The CPA Journal refers to these programs as "e-waste recovery systems."

    Donation

    • The U.S. federal government offers tax credits for the donation of old monitors in working condition to charitable organizations and schools. The Internal Revenue Service and secondary markets like eBay are responsible for setting the value for donated computer parts. In some cases, these tax rebates are worth more than what you would earn from reselling your old monitors to a second-hand retailer.

    Recycle

    • In 2007, several U.S. states passed resolutions mandating that computer manufacturers recycle at least 60 percent of their products. Some municipalities set up scheduled days and locations for consumers to recycle their old computer monitors.
