According to Kitchen and Bath Business Magazine's 2010 Remodelers 360 study, 16 percent of those surveyed had updated or remodeled their kitchens the previous year. Another 22 percent planned to remodel, but held off for budget reasons or uncertainty about finances.
Cost

A minor remodeling of a 200-square-foot kitchen, including refacing the cabinets, averaged $21,411, according to Remodeling Magazine's 2009-2010 Cost vs. Value Report. A major remodeling, including new cabinets, averaged $57,215. An upscale remodel, with new cherry cabinets and granite countertops, averaged $111,794.

Minor kitchen remodels return 78 percent of their cost when the home is sold, according to the "Remodeling" magazine report. Major remodels return 73 percent and upscale projects return 63 percent.
Professional vs. DIY

About 30 percent of homeowners who spent more than $2,500 on kitchen remodeling enlisted the help of a designer or architect, according to the Remodelers 360 survey. Of those who spent more than $15,000 on their remodels, 34 percent did the work themselves.
