What Training Is Needed for a Career in Property Management?

Property managers have strong skills in accounting, finance, marketing and overall business administration.

Property managers are hired to oversee the upkeep and handle the administration of investment properties. This includes individual homes, apartment complexes, industrial parks and office buildings. To enter the field, you will need to have some experience and/or education in a related field.

Business Education

Most property managers have some formal education in the areas of business administration, accounting, finance, marketing or law. Coursework (or a degree) in these fields is attractive to potential employers and offers a strong foundation for a career in property management.

Property Management Classes

Some property managers opt for career training and classes in real estate and property management. This training is available at online schools, community colleges and professional associations. These programs range from a single class to a complete program leading to a degree in the field.

Entry-Level Positions

Individuals with some work experience in business, management, accounting or finance may qualify for entry-level property management positions with little or no formal education. Some entry-level positions in property management include administrative assistant, leasing consultant, on-site manager or assistant property manager.
