What Type of Paint for Asbestos Floor Tiles?

Many older homes contain floor tiles composed of asbestos. You can render the asbestos harmless by coating it with the appropriate paint. Unfortunately, if you use the wrong type of paint, you will end up with chipping and peeling.

  1. Acrylic

    • Acrylic floor paints are appropriate for sealing asbestos floor tiles because they are durable enough to withstand duress.

    Latex and Oil

    • Ordinary latex- and oil-based paints are not appropriate for asbestos floor tile. These paints will chip and peel over time. This will not only result in an unattractive finish, but may also allow the asbestos fibers to escape into the air.

    Considerations

    • No type of paint will adhere to bare asbestos floor tiles. You must apply an acrylic primer before you paint, or you will ultimately end up with paint failure in the form of flaking.
