Interior Decorating in the 1980's

Pastels, floral patterns, wall-to-wall mirrors and ruffled window treatments often come to mind when thinking about 1980s interior decorating. Whether you are going for a retro look or trying to update your home, there are some true tell signs of '80s decorating. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Colors & Fabrics

    • Popular colors in the '80s included salmon, peach, mauve, teal and hunter green. Floral patterns were often used on sofas, chairs, bedding, wallpaper borders and window valances.

    Floors, Walls and Ceilings

    • Carpets got shorter and more colorful in the 1980s. Shag carpet was replaced with shorter plush carpet in colors such as pink and blue. Vinyl flooring was used in bathrooms and kitchens. Many experimented with texturing, such as sponge painting and creating "popcorn" ceilings.

    Mirrors

    • Wall mirrors are a sure sign of '80s style. Bathrooms had wall-to-wall plate glass mirrors. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors and mirrored closet doors were used to maximize light and give the appearance of more space in the home.

    Lighting

    • Typical '80s bathrooms had Hollywood dressing room-style bulbs around the mirror. Neon lights and brass and etched glass chandeliers were also popular.
