Law enforcement canines are often referred to as K-9s.

Law enforcement canines are often referred to as K-9s. Teams of law enforcement canines are referred to as K-9 teams. Highly trained K-9 security teams are in use in many countries around the world. Handler training takes place alongside training the dogs as partnership between dogs and humans in any police dog unit is essential.

  1. Training

    • Police officers receive special training on how to handle police dogs in potentially lethal situations in which security is threatened. According to the Eden Consulting Group, handler training includes extensive lessons on how to work with K-9 teams, including how to back up K-9 officers; how to cover the K-9 officers while building searches are taking place; criminal psychological profiles to enable you to predict when a suspect is about to flee; aspects of K-9 canine behavior; learning how to train the dogs; practicing tactical deployment scenarios; and live fire training alongside the K-9 team.

    Types

    • There are various types of training available. The Eden Consulting Group offers various training programs. The Patrol Dog Program includes tactical training, as well as classroom lectures on liability concerns, K-9 officer safety and training techniques. The Advanced K-9 Tactical Program involves further development of dog and handler from the previous program. A narcotics program and explosives program are also available.

    K-9 Officers

    • It is common for K-9 police dogs to be sworn-in members of the team with their own officer numbers and badges.
