Growing Conditions for Bay Leaves

Growing Conditions for Bay Leaves thumbnail
The bay leaf is a common kitchen herb.

Bay leaves come from a variety of the laurel tree, a Mediterranean evergreen that can grow up to 70 feet tall. This plant also can be cultivated for indoor container gardening. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Climate

    • Bay trees grow best in a warm, moist climate, similar to that of the Mediterranean area. If planted outdoors, you must insure that the ground temperature does not drop below 25 degrees. If growing indoors, keep your plant in a climate-controlled area as sudden temperature changes and drafts are detrimental.

    Soil

    • The bay plant requires rich soil that is moist but well drained. One way to achieve this is by using rich potting soil mixed with sand for drainage and mulched to hold in moisture. Adding a small amount of fertilizer every spring also improves growth.

    Sun

    • Bay trees need plenty of sun to grow well. Choose full sun unless your climate has very hot direct sunlight. In that case, choose a growing spot with slight shade. If you are growing bay in a pot, you can move it to catch the best light or shade as needed. If growing indoors, keep the plant directly in a window or under a grow light.
