    • No valid research or evidence supports the claims about hedge apples' effectiveness against spiders, reports Iowa State University Extension. Although hedge apples contain some insect deterrent compounds, Iowa State does not recommend using them for pest control.

    Expert Insight

    • Rod Crawford, the curator of Arachnids at Burke Museum in Washington, says that spiders even live on Osage-orange trees and "make webs on the fallen fruit." Since spiders probably can't even detect airborne odors, hedge apples are unlikely to be able to repel spiders.
