How to Have a High Tea Party

High tea is not the formal, etiquette-laden tea that Americans picture. The formal tea is referred to as afternoon tea. Instead, high tea is the equivalent of supper. The designation of “high” refers to the height of the table at which the tea was served. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Time

    • High tea happens late in the afternoon, between 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M.. You serve high tea at the dining table, which is taller than a tea table.

    Food

    • Hosts serve full meals. This can include meat dishes, fish dishes and salads, as well as breads and pastries. There are no formal courses. Lay out the food dishes on the table and let your guests serve themselves.

    Drinks

    • Tea is not the only drink consumed at high tea. Common beverages also include ale, coffee, and hot chocolate. Have carafes available for guests to pour their drinks.

    Etiquette

    • Etiquette for a high tea does not differ from the etiquette of any meal served at a dining table. Use your napkin, say please and thank you, and do not burp at the table.
