How Much Sun Do Peonies Need?
The most common type of peony is the garden, or herbaceous, peony, with bushy stems. The other type is a tree peony, which is a shrub. Although less common than garden peonies, tree peonies are gaining in popularity. Does this Spark an idea?

Sun Requirements
-
Peonies need six hours of full sun daily. According to Clemson Cooperative Extension, herbaceous peonies need at least six hours of full sun a day. If there is not enough sun, blossoms are fewer and smaller. In hot locations, afternoon shade should protect flowers from fading too quickly. Tree peonies need about the same amount of sun, but must be planted in a location with dappled or afternoon shade since their petals are damaged by too much sun.
Failure to Bloom
-
Peonies vary in blossom types. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension notes that peonies will not bloom or will have few blossoms if they are planted in heavy shade. The problem is worse if the peony is competing for space with the roots of another plant.

Planting Time
-
Fall is the best time to buy and plant garden peonies. But tree peonies can be purchased and planted in the spring and fall, so the plants develop strong roots before winter's freezes and droughts in summers. There are many varieties of tree peonies available, but they are expensive because they are propagated by a slow and difficult grafting process. However, characteristics such as their hardiness and beauty might outweigh the expense.
