Proper Trimming of Azaleas
Azaleas are generally spring-flowering shrubs that often benefit from pruning or occasional trimming. Prune to remove dead wood, or to reduce an overgrown shrub. But azaleas must be trimmed properly to enhance flowering and prevent damage. Does this Spark an idea?

Timing
-
It's best to prune azaleas in spring. The Azalea Society of America recommends trimming azaleas in early spring. This will reduce the number current year flowers, but gives the plant the full growing season to fill out. The University of Florida IFAS Leon County Extension recommends pruning just after bloom, but before the Fourth of July to ensure splendid blooming the next year.
Pruning Tools
-
Prune azaleas with sharp, clean hand shears -- no hedge trimmers! Stay away from hedge trimmers when trimming azaleas, according to the University of Florida. Shearing causes unnatural growth and oddly-spaced flowers. The Azalea Society of America recommends the use of clean, sharp hand pruners each time you trim.

Trimming Method
-
Start with removing any dead wood. Next, cut back the tallest three to four branches, to side branches at staggering heights. Rejuvenate older shrubs by repeating this process each spring for about three years.
