Massachusetts Laws on Use of Studded Tires thumbnail
Seasonal use of studded snow tires is permitted under Massachusetts law.

Massachusetts' harsh winter conditions and rolling hilly terrain make the use of studded snow tires desirable for added traction and safety. Massachusetts law permits seasonal use of these tires with some limitations.

  1. General Law

    • According to Massachusetts general laws part I, title XIV, chapter 90, section 16, studded snow tires may be used between November 1 and May 1. Use of studded tires before November 1 or after May 1 can be authorized by the registrar if weather conditions require it.

    Inspection Regulations

    • The Massachusetts Department of Transportation requires periodic inspection of motor vehicles to ensure they meet operational safety and emission standards. In accordance with the DOT's "procedures for inspection of non-commercial motor vehicles," any vehicle with studded snow tires inspected between May 1 and November 1 will fail its inspection.

    Exceptions

    • Massachusetts general laws part I, title XIV, chapter 90, section 16, permits the use of studded snow tires after May 1 and before November 1 on emergency fire vehicles.
