How to Compare a Sony to a Kindle
The Sony eReader and Amazon Kindle are two popular ebook readers. When you're choosing an ebook reader, you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of each model.
-
Formats
-
The Sony eReader supports the .epub file format, which you can open with other programs and devices even if something happens to your ebook reader. The Amazon Kindle, on the other hand, supports the proprietary .mobi file format, which you can only open with a Kindle or Kindle application. This puts you at a disadvantage if something happens to your Kindle and you don't have a device with a supported Kindle app to open your books.
Features
-
Both the Sony eReader model the Daily Edition and the Amazon Kindle are wireless, allowing you to download books without connecting the ebook reader to your computer. The Daily Edition, however, is newer and costlier than the Kindle. Older eReader models, while they are lower in price, don't have wireless capabilities. On the other hand, the eReader has a touch screen, making it potentially easier to navigate pages than with the Kindle's buttons.

Library
-
The Amazon Kindle gives you access to more than 400,000 books, newspapers, magazines and blog feeds through the Amazon store. The Sony eReader gives you access to the Reader Store and also allows you to check out ebooks from the public library system. As of September 2010, the Kindle has no system for borrowing or lending ebooks.
