What is a Headlight Adjustment Tool?

Headlights that are out of alignment can be annoying and dangerous. Adjusting them is an easy repair you can do at home. Depending on your vehicle's headlights, a special adjustment tool may be necessary to properly align the headlights.

Uses

Many headlights can be adjusted by simply using a small Phillips-head screwdriver. However, some vehicles have aerodynamic headlights that have adjusters mounted in the rear of the headlight. These adjuster screws are hard to access and a headlight adjustment tool is needed.

Headlight adjustment tools are sometimes made for specific makes and models of cars. One tool will often work on a number of different cars. A headlight adjustment tool has an extra long handle that allows easy access to the hard-to-reach adjusters. These tools have a 4mm hex that is fitted with a roller clutch. This allows for infinite settings on the end.

Adjustments

Most headlight adjusters have a horizontal and vertical screw with a small spring behind it. Adjusting the headlights is as simple as turning the adjusting screws to raise or lower the headlight beams. Turning the screws clockwise should raise the lights, while counterclockwise should lower the beam. The side adjuster screw will move the beam to the left and right.
