What Is Beak Adaptation?

Different kinds of birds have different shapes and sizes of beaks. Each size and shape comes with its own set of merits and flaws. Adaptation measures how well a particular shape and size of beak can perform a particular task.

  1. Examples

    • The hummingbird has a long, slender beak that it uses to sip nectar from deep within flowers. The woodpecker also has a long, straight beak---but its beak is stout and sturdy for pecking its way into trees. Parrots have short, curved beaks good for breaking open nuts, while ducks have wide, flat beaks for dredging food out of mud.

    Historical Significance

    • Several species of ground finches inhabited the Galapagos Islands at the time Charles Darwin visited on a survey voyage of the HMS Beagle. Each has a beak adapted to eating a different kind of seed---some seeds small and soft, others large and tough. Darwin's observations of these beak adaptations later inspired him to formulate the theory of natural selection.

    Terminology

    • Ornithologists---scientists who study birds---commonly use the word bill as well as beak. Originally, beaks were only the sharply hooked bills of parrots and predatory raptors like hawks and eagles.
