How Big Is a Movie Screen?

Bigger than televisions, movie screens have an almost universal appeal.

Movie screens are the canvas for films. They awe with their size and grandeur, yet not all movie screens are alike.

Standard Movie Screen

Seating capacity is a good indicator for screen size.

Screens vary in size because the auditoriums that house them are not all the same. As a general rule, the larger the auditorium, the larger the movie screen. Typically, movie screens range in size from 30 to 90 feet wide by 10 to 30 feet tall.

IMAX Screens

IMAX movie screens vary in size as well. If you are going to one of the more than 180 retrofitted auditoriums installed in 2008, then you are watching a screen that varies from 40 to 60 feet wide by 30 to 50 feet high. An IMAX at a museum or science center that has not been retrofitted has an average screen size that also varies between 60 and 80 feet wide by 40 to 65 feet high.

Fun Fact

The largest movie screen in the world is in Sydney, Australia. It is a massive 117 feet wide by 96 feet high and can seat 540 people.
