What Is the Download File Extension XPI?

What Is the Download File Extension XPI? thumbnail
When an XIP file shows up on your computer, there's no reason to panic.

The XIP file type is a zip file used primarily by Mozilla's Firefox browser. When opened by the Firefox utility, it installs an extension to the browser.

  1. Function

    • XPI (pronounced "zippy") files are cross-platform installer modules that function to install packages, using XPInstall technology. These modules, also called bundles, are created by Mozilla developers for the easy installation of Firefox specific software, such as Plugins, Extensions and Themes.

    Modules

    • The bundles contain both the installation instructions and the software, which is packaged in a JAR file. The files are meant to be user friendly, needing to only be downloaded into the extension manger, where the file will automatically finish installation.

    .JS vs. .RDF

    • As of Gecko 1.9, Mozilla has moved away from using install.js packages, instead using an install.rdf manifest. This requires Plugins to be packaged as an extension.
