My Dog Has Terrible Gas, What Can I Do?
We know the joke of blaming the dog. While some owners may laugh about Rover's gas, other owners may be embarrassed about their dog's unfortunate flatulence. Often, a simple change can make a big difference in your dog's gas.
-
Change the Food
-
Corn, soy and grains are common causes of gas in dogs. Many commercial dog foods contain grains, which can cause gas. Soy, corn and wheat are particularly difficult for dogs to digest. Foods with a high percentage of grains may be the culprit for gas. Artificial flavoring, by-products and other lower quality ingredients can also contribute to gas. Try a grain-free food or food with fewer grains and fillers.
Slow Your Dog Down
-
Dogs that eat too fast can ingest air, which can cause gas. Eating too fast can cause gas. According to veterinarian Race Foster, "Flatulence is often caused by air that is gulped down when pets eat too quickly" Try a bowl designed to slow down the eating process. You also might use an elevated feeder, which will reduce the amount of air that your dog swallows during eating.

Add Supplements
-
Plain yogurt is a great digestive supplement for dogs. Adding probiotics or digestive enzymes to your dog's food may help to decrease gas. Natural enzymes in the ingredients in dog food are often rendered inactive and helpful digestive bacteria killed during the cooking and preserving process. Many commercial digestive aid products are available. You might also try adding plain yogurt to your dog's food, as yogurt is an excellent source of acidophilus.
Exercise
-
Regular exercise can improve your dog's digestion. Regular exercise can aid digestion and help dispel gas from the body. Never exercise your dog vigorously immediately before or after a meal. A light walk shortly after a meal may encourage proper elimination. Regular exercise will boost your dog's metabolism and promote healthy digestion.
