The wall art of the 1930s was the wall art of the modern age. The popularity of the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the century and through the teens and late 20s gave way to a new modern art movement called Art Deco. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Definition

    • The art of the 1930's was primarily done in the Art Deco style, although there were still carryovers from the Art Nouveau era as well. The Deco Art trend began at the end of the 1920's and remained popular through the 1930's.

    Accessories

    • Accessories like Art Deco-style wall sconces, mirror sets and wall clocks enhanced galleries featuring fine art paintings and prints. These pieces were constructed of the popular materials of the time like marble, hardwood and steel.

    Characteristics

    • Art Nouveau tends to have curlicue designs while Deco utilizes geometric shapes. Even the portrait art of the day, like that of Tamara de Lempicka, retained a geometric, stylized feel to it. The facial features and body construction resembled statues.
