Dogs and cats frequently need relief from fleas and ticks.

House pets like cats and dogs commonly suffer from flea or tick infestations at some point in their lives. Pet owners try many remedies to relieve their animals' suffering. One avenue taken to repel these parasites is a remedy sold under the names of Frontline and Advantage. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Basic Concept

    • Unlike flea shampoos and flea collars, these products are topical ointments. A small dollop of the solution is squeezed from a tiny tube and gently rubbed into the pet's coat at the base of the neck, right where it connects to the shoulders at the back of the head. The application should be repeated as necessary every 30 days.

    How It Works

    • Through a process called translocation, the ointment works its way through the pet's coat. The oil in the coat slowly dispenses through the hair over 30 days. The initial translocation normally completes in about 24 hours. Fleas reportedly die within 12 hours, and ticks succumb in around 48 hours.

    Considerations

    • The ingredients in these products rarely affect other medications the pet is receiving. A slight, temporary irritation may occur at the medication-placement spot. Applying the medication more frequently than advised apparently has no effect on pest eradication.
