In the days of high gas prices, many are allowing their gasoline tanks to run practically dry and risk running out altogether. To keep the purchased gasoline running at the optimum efficiency, and not risk running out of gas, keep at least one-quarter tank of gas in the vehicle at all times.

Considerations

Aside from being stranded in a dangerous or inhospitable location, running out of gas can damage not only the fuel filter or fuel pump pickup, but also the fuel injectors, which can be expensive to repair, according to Motor Trend.

Warning

Running low on fuel on a regular basis is a hazard to the fuel pump because it picks up debris from the bottom of the fuel tank that can clog the pump.
