What Is Windows CE?

Windows CE is described by the Microsoft website as a real-time operating system designed for small, low-power computer devices such as PDAs, palmtop computers and certain types of telephones.

  1. History

    • The HPC Factor website reports the Windows CE operating system was developed using technology created in the early 1990s for the aborted Microsoft Winpad and Pulsar systems. Windows CE version 1 was released in November 1996 to be compatible with the Windows 95 operating system.

    Restrictions

    • According to the Tech Republic website, Windows CE operates as a system known as Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC). Windows CE is not compatible with all programs available for PCs; however, programs such as Microsoft Office and BMP files can be used with Windows CE.

    Use

    • The Tech Republic website reports Windows CE--compatible systems use a desktop designed to mimic that of Windows 95. The devices designed for use with Windows CE usually use a pen-type device and a touch screen to access Windows CE's limited capabilities.
