History

The term "home economics" was first coined at the inaugural Lake Placid Conference in Florida in 1899. Home economics was introduced as a formal way of teaching domesticity to women and, since that time, emphasis has shifted from scientific approaches to domestic skills toward awareness of nutrition and hygiene.
