A good candidate for trundle bed use

Trundle beds have been around for hundreds of years for the same reason that they are still popular today--great space savers. General construction techniques of these harbingers of a good night's sleep are similar throughout the industry. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • A trundle bed fits into the space underneath another bed when not in use. Basically, it's a box with wheels that holds a mattress. Just slightly shy of the length of the main bed, the trundle slides or rolls out to expose the mattress for sleeping. Often a double bed has a twin-size trundle. Twin-size beds can also house a trundle and are used extensively in children's rooms.

    Construction Materials

    • Trundles can be metal or laminate but are most made of wood. Many mimic the style and color of the main bed for which it acts as a companion. In centuries past brass and iron beds had trundles to match.

    Basic Construction

    • Simple basic construction involves a rectangular frame, a plywood platform to hold the mattress and casters to aid in moving the bed in and out of it's hiding place. Corner braces strengthen the unit. If you are building your own trundle you may customize it according to the main bed. The depth of the mattress and clearance available will determine height of the sides of the frame.
