Role of Public Libraries

Public libraries provide far more than just books.

Public libraries allow individuals to borrow books and access information free of charge. They are open to everyone and increasingly provide services and facilities beyond traditional book lending.

Services

Public libraries offer a range of materials to accommodate the needs of all sections of society. Examples include children's books, audio books and multimedia items. More recently, Internet provision has become an important part of the public library to extend access of information to all people. Some larger public libraries also provide non-traditional services such as job seeking advice sessions and computer skills classes.

Access

The American Library Association seeks to "ensure that every individual has access to needed information at the time needed and in a format the individual can utilize." In practice this means that public libraries operate a free service and that services are offered in English and other languages.

Community Programs

Public libraries provide spaces for inclusive community and education projects. These may include children's reading groups, cultural heritage events and book clubs.

Location

In addition to the large central libraries of major cities, numerous smaller public libraries extend access of information into towns and communities. This is facilitated by bookmobiles, which are used to reach areas not covered by conventional public libraries.
