Difference Between Body Spray & Deodorant

The difference between a deodarant and a body spray can be confusing for consumers.

According to the July 2010 issue of GCI magazine, deodorant accounted for $17 billion worth of sales worldwide, a figure that is increasing as consumers add more of these products to their daily regime. Deodorants are sold in solid stick, gel, liquid roll-on or spray form.

Function

There are two types of spray in the personal care market: antiperspirant deodorant spray and body spray. Antiperspirant sprays contain an aluminum-based chemical (usually aluminum chlorohydrate) that will reduce perspiration. Body sprays do not contain an antiperspirant, only fragrance. Their main function is to smell nice, not prevent sweating or odors.

Effects

Antiperspirant body sprays reduce wetness and body odor. They can be heavily fragranced and some people, predominantly teenagers, use them as a perfume or cologne, although spraying it all over the body is not recommended. On the other hand, fragrance body sprays can be used all over as an alternative to perfume or cologne.

Considerations

The chemicals found in spray deodorants such as butane and propane can contribute to skin irritation for some. Fragrance-free deodorant sprays made from natural mineral salts are becoming increasingly popular for consumers who suffer from sensitive skin or fragrance sensitivities.
