The UV radiation associated with tanning beds can be harmful to our eyes.

According to Prevent Blindness America, a tanning bed can emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is 100 times that of the sun. Because of this, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all tanning salons and facilities to provide UV-blocking eye protection to customers. Simply closing your eyes or wearing regular sunglasses is not enough to combat the harmful effects of UV radiation on your eyes.

  1. Photokeratitis

    • Photokeratitis is basically a sunburn to the cornea caused by intense exposure to UV radiation. It can cause pain to one or both eyes, tearing, swollen eyelids and in some cases, blurred vision. Photokeratitis is a treatable condition and typically goes away in a few days.

    Skin Cancer

    • Skin cancer is commonly associated with exposure to the sun and tanning beds. The risk of developing skin cancer around the eyes is increased when tanning without eye protection. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the skin around the eyes is sensitive to UV light and a common area for skin cancer.

    Cataracts

    • Cataracts are characterized by cloudy or spotted vision as well as pain in and around the eyes. Tanning beds can increase the chance of cataracts. Cataracts must be treated surgically and in severe cases, can lead to loss of vision and blindness.

    Macular Degeneration

    • Macular degeneration is caused by damage to the retina, the central part of the eye. It can lead to blurred vision of which there is no current treatment. Some studies have suggested that increased exposure to UV radiation can increase the chance of developing macular degeneration, according to Medline Plus.
