A missing W-2 can be extremely frustrating when you preparing to file your taxes, but there are several steps you can follow to obtain it.

  1. Contact Your Employer

    • Before you take any other action, contact your employer. Employers must mail W-2s by January 31. Ask when W-2s were mailed and verify that your correct address is on file. Allow a week or two to receive your W-2 after submitting a request.

    Contact the IRS

    • If contacting your employer does not work, the next step is to contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You may call the IRS at 800-829-1040 after February 16. When you call, provide your name, address, Social Security number, phone number, dates of employment, and an estimate of wages earned and taxes withheld.

    File Form 4852

    • If you do not receive a W-2, you still must file your return or request an extension by April 15. If you have not received a W-2 by then, complete Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2. Submit it with your tax return.

    Amend Your Return

    • If you receive a W-2 after you filed your tax return, compare it to what you reported on Form 4852. If the two differ, you must file an amended return, Form 1040X, to correctly report your wages.
