How do I Purchase Platinum Coins From Canada? thumbnail
Canada mints a small handful of platinum coins for collectors every year.

The Canadian government issues a small amount of platinum coins for serious coin collectors every year. While it may be possible to find platinum coins at Canadian coin shops, the easiest way to purchase them is through the Canadian mint's website.

  1. History

    • Canada first minted a platinum coin in 1988, with the one troy ounce Platinum Maple Leaf coin. Although the design on these platinum coins has changed (and continues to change annually), the denomination has always been $50.

    Purchasing

    • Visit the Canadian Royal Mint's website and use the search bar at the top of the page to search for platinum coins. The Royal Canadian Mint sells directly to the United States, so the basic process of ordering your coins is not substantially different than if you were ordering from the U.S. Mint.

    Credit Card and SSN

    • Your credit card must to accept transactions in Canadian funds before placing an order with the Canadian Mint. Talk to your credit card provider for confirmation. For orders greater than $2,000 Canadian (platinum coins fall into this category), you must give the Canadian mint your Social Security number or your IRS number.

    Taxes

    • It is your responsibility to pay all taxes and fees on a product ordered from another country. If you fail to pay all of your fees, you will be charged for any additional duties that have accrued as a result of your negligence.
