Is There a Limit on How Much Spending Money You Can Take Into Mexico?

Cancun is a popular tourist destination.

There is no limit on the amount of spending money you can take into Mexico. If traveling with more than $10,000, you must report it to both the U.S. and Mexican governments.

U.S. Restrictions

When traveling, there is no limit on the amount of money you may take out of the U.S.. You must report amounts greater than $10,000 to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. You can be penalized if you do not comply with this regulation.

Mexico Restrictions

The Mexican government permits foreign travelers to bring the equivalent of up to $10,000 in U.S. currency into Mexico. You may bring in more money but must advise the Mexican customs agency.

Definitions

Money includes coins, currency, travelers' checks, money orders, investment securities and negotiable monetary instruments.

Considerations

It can be dangerous to travel with large amounts of cash. Travelers checks and banking machines are a safer alternative. U.S. citizens can register at the U.S. embassy or consulate to obtain updated travel and security information.
