Construction Workers' Rights
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration says workers in any industry have the right to a safe workplace. The construction industry is especially dangerous due to all of the heavy machinery and equipment involved. It is important for construction workers to be informed of their rights regarding a safe work environment.
-
Significance
-
It is the responsibility of employers to protect their workers from hazards in the work environment. It is illegal to send construction workers into work zones that have not been approved for safety, or to make workers use machinery and equipment that are not properly safeguarded.
Prevention/Solution
-
OSHA says construction companies must provide workers with appropriate personal protective equipment to perform their jobs safely. This includes hardhats, neon vests, steel-toe boots, gloves and goggles.
-
Identification
-
Construction workers have the right to know the risks their jobs entail. Employers must teach workers how to identify hazards. According to OSHA, the construction industry has a high fatality rate, but the occupation may be safe when workers are aware of risks. Uninformed workers might be exposed to more safety hazards than workers who are well-informed.
