Proper Attire for an Evening Wedding

Evening weddings often require semi-formal attire.

Wedding attire is often dictated by wedding theme and formality. If you are having a traditional evening wedding, the wedding party and guests will most likely be dressed formally or semi-formally. Color can vary to suit theme or season.

Bride

The distinction between evening and day bridal fashion is very subtle and most bridal gowns are considered formal attire. The most common distinction in gowns meant for night and day is the sparkle and beading on the gown. The more jewels and beading a gown has, the more suited to an evening wedding it is.

Groom

The groom typically should wear a tuxedo, which is semi-formal attire and more casual than the traditional tailcoat option. Most commonly, the tuxedo will be black and consists of a matching dinner jacket and pants, accompanied by a white dress shirt and bow tie. If you are having a summer wedding, a white tuxedo can be worn instead of the black. The tie color can be chosen to match the theme of the wedding.

Guests

Guests of a wedding should dress semi-formally for an evening wedding. Most colors are appropriate, including white and black, which were previously considered inappropriate. Male guests should wear tuxedos. Female guests should usually choose a ball gown, avoiding excess cleavage, and should wear a jacket or shawl over thin straps during the ceremony.
