How to Compare Cheap College Textbooks

How to Compare Cheap College Textbooks thumbnail
Used college textbooks provide the same information as new ones at a lower cost.

In addition to college tuition, the cost of college textbooks also adds up quickly. One way to offset the cost is by purchasing used textbooks. However, compare the used textbooks to ensure you get the best deal.

  1. Damage

    • View the outside of the college textbook for damage to the cover. Generally, hardback textbooks withstand the wear and tear better. However, they also cost most. Also, view the inside of the book for damaged or missing pages.

    Markings

    • Open the used books and compare the amount of highlighting and writing on the pages. Since highlighting may be annoying and provide the wrong information, the used textbook with the least amount of markings is usually the better buy. Also, avoid buying cheap textbooks with the answers filled in on quiz questions. There's no guarantee they're the right answers.

    Shipping

    • Compare the shipping rates of books bought online since that will increase the cost. Use the same site to purchase several textbooks if combined shipping is available.

    Price

    • Compare paperback and hardback versions. Generally, paperbacks are cheaper. However, used books vary in price, so check several websites, such as Text Wheel, Thrifty College Student and Get Textbooks, for the cheapest books available.
