Computer usage differs between home and work environments.

Typical uses for computers vary between home and office environments. Home PCs are likely to be used for a more varied range of tasks and leisure activities.

Tasks

Modern computers are capable of performing a wide range of tasks. Some tasks, such as word processing, sending and receiving emails, and accessing the Internet, are as likely to be performed at home as at work. Other activities, such as playing games, watching movies, and downloading and listening to music are more likely to be performed in the home environment.

Specifications

Some activities performed primarily on home computers, such as gaming and editing home movies, are likely to require a higher PC specification. Work environments carrying out only basic computing tasks are likely to be able to function with less sophisticated machines. Storing family photos, and music and movie collections also generally requires more storage space than will be required on a work PC.

Options

Computer manufacturers usually have separate hardware ranges aimed at home and work environments. Home machines typically will have more storage and sometimes dedicated graphics cards. Business computers have features more important to business environments, such as on-site warranties and system cases that are easy to open without tools, for quick replacement of parts.
