Information on Bodyguard Training

Information on Bodyguard Training thumbnail
Bodyguards come from a variety of backgrounds.

While there is no formal accreditation process for bodyguards in the United States, you can get an edge with a variety of privately run courses. However, since many bodyguards come from military or law enforcement backgrounds, competition is fierce, even with private training.

  1. Weaponry

    • Many bodyguards carry weapons. This is illegal without a license in 30 states, but you can receive training that results in a concealed carry license. USA Bodyguards offers, in addition to its standard bodyguarding course, a four-hour concealed weapon course.

    Planning

    • Bodyguard training often stresses the importance of advance research and operations planning. This is because it is substantially less risky to plan an operation so that it goes smoothly than to react to problems with violence or evasion. Accordingly, the bulk of bodyguard training focuses on how to plan routes, estimate travel times and other considerations to eliminate problems before they become problems.

    Tactics

    • Bodyguard training tactics will differ depending on the school, but they tend to focus on how to shoot tactically, where to stand to best protect your subject, and how to spot and respond to ambushes. The Center for Advanced Security Studies, for example, runs a multi-week immersion program in which tactics are taught in a classroom and then practiced through drills.
