The Difference Between Used & Refurbished

The Difference Between Used & Refurbished thumbnail
Purchasing a refurbished computer is an affordable alternative to buying new.

Refurbished refers to an item, such as a computer, that has been repaired and restored to a new condition. Often times, a refurbished computer has been returned unused by a customer. Used refers to a secondhand item sold "as is."

  1. Testing

    • The manufacturer test the functionality of the hardware and software to ensure that they are comparable to a new model. Many used models are not tested for functionality; therefore, there is no way of telling whether the item will function properly after it is purchased.

    Warranties

    • Consumers typically receive guaranteed protection on refurbished items such as computers and cell phones. For example, Dell offers a standard one year hardware warranty for refurbished computers. Used items are normally sold without warranty protection leaving the consumer unprotected.

    Return Policies

    • Dell, IBM and Hewlett-Packard offer a return policy on refurbished models ranging from seven to 30 days. Used models often come with no return policy leaving the consumer with no replacement option should the product malfunction or completely break down.
