When crocheting, hook size is one of the most important choices. The right size hook has to correspond with the weight of the yarn or thread you're using and to the type of pieces you're creating.

Sizing

Letters on crochet hooks identify the size, or the diameter, of the hook, which indicates the size of the stitch the hook will make. The larger the size, the bigger the stitch.

Use by Country

Letters are used by America and other non-metric countries to determine the size of the hook. Each letter corresponds with a millimeter measurement. Using the millimeter measurement has become more popular and less confusing that referring to the letters for size information in all countries.

Range

Crochet hooks range from letter B (2.25 mm) to S (19 mm). There are no O or R size hooks.
