Proper Posture When Driving

Proper Posture When Driving thumbnail
Proper posture when driving can help end back pain.

Drivers can suffer leg and back pain while driving. Sometimes this is caused by the immobility of driving, but sometimes it's caused because the driver isn't using proper posture to sit in the car.

  1. Angle of the Knees

    • The driver should sit with his knees level with his hips. Some cars allow the driver's seat to raise and lower for the correct positioning; without this feature, a driver may want to sit on a small pillow or place a lumbar support behind the small of his back. The driver's knees should be able to bend at about a 130° angle.

Distance of the Steering Wheel and Pedals

    • The driver's seat shouldn't be so close to the steering wheel that the driver would be in danger if the air bags were to inflate. The driver's chest should be about ten inches away from the steering wheel. If you have a car with a tilt steering wheel, take the time to position it to a comfortable level and angle.

Other Tips for Correct Posture While Driving

    • If you need the bottom of the seat closer to be able to reach the pedals adequately, tilt the seat slightly backwards. Doing so also reduces the effect on your body of the constant vibration of the car. Make sure the top of the headrest is between eye level and the top of your head.
