How do I Prevent Ringworm in Animals?

Dermatophytosis, commonly called ringworm, is a fungal infection that affects skin, hair and nails in both humans and animals. While prevention isn't a guarantee, there are certain steps you can take to help prevent ringworm in your pets.

  1. Hygiene

    • According to Precious Pets, the best defense against ringworm infection is good hygiene. Regularly shampooing your pet and keeping bedding and sleeping areas clean will help prevent the spread of this fungal infection.

    Activity

    • When possible, try to prevent your animal from chasing rodents and digging into their burrows. Rodents frequently carry ringworm and can give it to your pets, as ringworm is contagious.

    Symptoms

    • Despite your best efforts, your pet may still develop ringworm. Unfortunately, it's impossible to diagnose ringworm by simply looking at the skin but keep your eye out for hair loss and skin lesions. Animals frequently try to scratch infected areas due to the itch typically caused with ringworm.

    Treatment

    • While most cases call for a topical shampoo, anti-fungal creams are sometimes used in infected areas without much hair. Oral medication is sometimes prescribed, though it's less frequent due to the side effects associated with such oral anti-fungal medications.
