      Alexandrite is named after Prince Alexander II of Russia. It was discovered in the early 1800s near emerald mines in the Ural Mountains. The stones change from red to green. Those were the colors of the Russian military so it became the official stone of the county. Today most Alexandrite has been mined out in Russia. New sources have been discovered in Asia and the Americas.

    • Alexandrite is associated with renewal and rebirth. It is believed the stone brings luck, love, happiness and greater self-esteem. It is also connected with spiritual growth.

    • Much of the Alexandrite on the market is synthetic because it is so scarce. Synthetic Alexandrite was first made in 1909. Authentic Alexandrite is rare and expensive. Expect to pay up to $15,000 for a top quality 1 carat stone.
